Helping children build confidence, skills and a strong foundation for the future
Thank you for your interest in SCG Tuitions. We understand that choosing the right tuition for your child is an important decision, so we have put together some of the questions parents most frequently ask.
If you have a question that isn't answered below, please feel free to contact us.
GENERAL INFORMATION
1. What age groups do you teach?
We currently offer tuition for children from Year 3 through to Year 5.
Our younger-year programmes focus on developing strong foundations in English and Maths, while our Year 4 and Year 5 programmes also prepare children for 11+ examinations where appropriate.
2. What subjects do you teach?
Depending on the year group, we offer:
English
Maths
Reading & Comprehension
Vocabulary
Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar
11+ examination preparation
KS2 SATs
We believe children need more than simply practising questions. We work on understanding, application, accuracy and confidence.
3. My child is only 8. Is it too early to start tuition?
Absolutely not.
For younger children, our focus is not on putting unnecessary pressure on them or starting intensive exam preparation too early.
Instead, we concentrate on developing the skills that will support them throughout primary school:
Strong English and Maths foundations
Reading comprehension
Vocabulary
Problem-solving
Mental maths
Grammar and spelling
Confidence
Independent learning skills
Building these skills gradually can make the transition into more advanced learning much easier.
4. How are lessons delivered?
We offer both:
Face-to-Face Classes
Small-group lessons where children learn alongside other pupils.
Online Classes
Live, interactive lessons delivered online. Resources and lesson recordings can also be provided where applicable.
Details of the available classes will be shared when you register your interest.
5. How many children are in a class?
We deliberately keep our classes relatively small so that children can receive support while also benefiting from learning alongside their peers.
Our face-to-face classes are generally small groups, while online classes may accommodate larger numbers depending on the programme.
6. Will my child receive individual attention?
Yes.
Although SCG Tuitions uses a group-learning model, we actively monitor children's participation, understanding and progress.
Children are encouraged to ask questions, contribute answers and explain their thinking rather than simply completing worksheets.
7. Does my child need to be at a particular ability level?
No.
Children do not need to be working at a particular level to join SCG Tuitions.
Our aim is to help each child develop from their current starting point.
Where appropriate, we may recommend an initial assessment or discussion so that we can understand your child's strengths and areas for development.
8. Will my child receive homework?
Yes.
Homework is an important part of reinforcing what children learn during lessons.
The amount and type of homework will depend on the child's year group and programme. We aim for homework to be purposeful rather than excessive.
9. Will you provide the resources?
Yes.
SCG Tuitions provides the learning materials required for the programme.
For our current programmes, we have developed resources specifically to support the curriculum and examination requirements.
10. Will my child need to buy textbooks?
Generally, no additional textbooks are required.
We provide the resources needed for the SCG Tuitions programme and will let parents know if anything additional is required.
11+ PREPARATION
11. Do you prepare children for the 11+?
Yes.
SCG Tuitions has extensive experience preparing children for grammar-school entrance examinations.
Our 11+ programme covers the skills children need across areas such as:
English
Maths
Vocabulary
Comprehension
Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar
Exam technique
Time management
12. Which 11+ examination are you preparing children for?
Our programme has been updated to reflect the FSCE 11+ examination format and the requirements relevant to the schools and areas our pupils are applying to.
We regularly review our programme and resources to ensure that our teaching reflects current examination requirements.
13. When should my child start 11+ preparation?
There is no single answer that applies to every child.
For younger children, we recommend focusing on strong English, Maths, reading and vocabulary foundations rather than rushing into intensive exam preparation.
As children move through Year 4 and Year 5, preparation can gradually become more examination-focused.
14. Do you offer mock examinations?
Yes.
Our 11+ programme includes regular mock examinations designed to give children experience of working under examination conditions.
Mocks help children develop:
Timing
Accuracy
Exam technique
Confidence
Concentration
Familiarity with different question styles
They also allow parents and tutors to identify areas that need further work.
15. How will I know how my child is progressing?
We believe communication with parents is important.
Parents may receive information about their child's progress, areas for improvement and performance in assessments/mocks, depending on the programme.
We encourage parents to communicate with us if they have concerns or questions about their child's learning.
16. What happens if my child is struggling with a topic?
We don't expect every child to understand everything immediately.
If a child is struggling, we identify the area that needs attention and provide additional explanation, practice and reinforcement where possible.
Our aim is to help children understand why they made a mistake, rather than simply correcting the answer.
17. What happens if my child is finding the work too easy?
We also monitor children who are working ahead of the expected level.
Where appropriate, we introduce more challenging questions and encourage children to develop deeper reasoning and problem-solving skills.
18. How do I register my child?
Simply complete the SCG Tuitions Registration/Booking Form.
Once we receive your details, we will contact you with the relevant information regarding availability, class options, fees and payment.
19. Is there an assessment before joining?
This depends on the programme and available spaces. For some programmes, we may recommend an initial assessment so that we can better understand your child's current level.
This is not intended to put pressure on your child. It simply helps us understand where they are and how we can support them.
20. Can I speak to someone before registering?
Of course.
We understand that every child is different, and parents often have questions before making a decision.
You are welcome to contact us to discuss your child's needs and the most suitable programme.
FEES & BOOKINGS
21. How much does tuition cost?
Fees vary depending on the year group, programme, lesson format and number of sessions.
The current fees and available options will be provided when you enquire.
22. Do I have to commit to a full year?
No. We will clearly explain the booking period, payment schedule and terms before you confirm your child's place.
23. Are spaces limited?
Yes. We deliberately limit class sizes to maintain the quality of teaching and learning.
Places are therefore allocated on a first-confirmed basis, subject to availability.
24. What makes SCG Tuitions different?
At SCG Tuitions, we don't believe tuition should simply mean giving children more worksheets.
We focus on understanding, application and confidence.
Our lessons aim to help children:
Learn → Understand → Practise → Apply → Improve
We also understand that children learn differently. Our goal is to create an environment where children feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and trying again.
25. Is SCG Tuitions only about getting into grammar school?
No. Although we have a strong focus on 11+ preparation, our wider aim is to develop strong, confident and independent learners.
The skills children develop through English, Maths, reading, reasoning and problem-solving are valuable far beyond an entrance examination.
